Strawbale Building
Our Strawbale building at Tapeley Park is open to visitors, built by Common Sense Solutions as an example of affordable, sustainable housing. It is powered and heated using wood and photovoltaic solar panels. Sheeps wool insulation lines the floor and roof cavities and this combined with the bale walls makes for a cosy. warm home. The walls are rendered on the outside with lime. Students from Bideford school helped to plaster the inside with a mix of clay, chopped straw and sand.
This little building is an example of what can be done on a low budget to provide an ecologically sound home. There is a great need for affordable housing and a corresponding strong desire for the opportunity to live a lifestyle that has positive impacts on our planet. It is up to central government to make the necessary changes in planning legislation to make affordable green development a reality.
