permaculture
Tapeley Parks permaculture garden is probably the best in Devon. The Agro-Forest Garden, designed along the principles of Permaculture by Bill Mollison, one of the original creators of the permaculture system, in 1994. The Permaculture principle uses what is available to maximise the fertility and abundance of the land, with as wide a diversity of mingled planting as possible to provide natural protections between species. It makes use of the natural life of the soil for fertility, and takes care of the water and prevents soil erosion in one act. Inspired by the abundance of natural Jungle the principals of agro-forestry mean that a three or four tiered vertical cropping system can make the land
productive many times over: below ground, at ground level and at heights above ground at the same time; with catch crops in the time spaces where later crops have not yet taken all the light. Permaculture is Permanent Agriculture and is focussed on sustainability, a global requirement for our continued living on this planet. It now provides a large proportion of the food eaten by residents of Tapeley.
